Hancock County farmland is under pressure from development, investors, and rising land costs. Many farmers are still working this land every day, including those growing corn and soybeans. This guide focuses on another part of the local farm economy: farms selling meat, produce, eggs, dairy, and other food directly to the community. If we want farmland to stay farmland, we need more ways for local farms to remain economically viable. Buying directly from nearby farms is one practical way to help.

At Tyner Pond Farm, we hope you buy from us when you are looking for grassfed beef, pasture-raised chicken, eggs, and local food delivered to your door.

But this page is about something bigger than our farm.

Hancock County farmland is under more pressure every year. Some of that pressure comes from housing. Some comes from warehouses, data centers, energy projects, and investors buying land without any real connection to farming.

If we want farmland to stay farmland, we have to make working farms worth keeping.

That means supporting the farms that are still raising animals, growing food, managing soil, and keeping land in agriculture. It means buying directly from farmers when we can. It also means understanding the difference between a local farm and a local shop that may be selling food grown or raised somewhere else.

Both can have a place in the community. But if the goal is to protect farmland in Hancock County, the most direct support goes to the people actually farming here.

This guide is meant to help people find local farms in and around Hancock County that sell meat, produce, eggs, dairy, and other farm products directly to the community.

Tyner Pond Farm

Location: Greenfield, IN (Hancock County)

Tuttle Orchards

Berry Goods Farm

Shanti Farm

Notes: The Engleking family has been farming in the area since 1937. All meat is processed at a state-inspected facility and produced without added hormones or antibiotics. Their dedicated on-farm retail shop is open to the public on Tuesdays and Saturdays, or by appointment.

Fair Farms & Produce

Location: Greenfield, IN (Hancock County)

Notes: Operated by the Fair family since 1993, this local farm shifted its focus to fresh produce and greenhouse plants in 2012. They are highly active in the community and serve as staple vendors at both the Farmers Market at the Fairgrounds in Greenfield and the Fishers Farmers Market. They were also recognized as a featured family farm at the Indiana State Fair.

M5 Family Farms

Location: 3824 S. Binford Rd, Carthage, IN 46115 (Located right on the eastern Hancock County line)
What they raise or grow: High-quality, grain-finished freezer beef (raised on homegrown hay and grain with zero growth hormones). They also cultivate corn, soybeans, wheat, and forage crops.

Notes: Run by the Muegge family (Bruce, Linda, and their children), this standout operation was named the 2024 Indiana Farm Family of the Year by Beck’s and Indiana AgriNews. They opened their dedicated on-farm freezer meat shop in 2019, selling individual cuts of beef as well as quarter, half, and whole custom orders. To support the local food economy, they also host the monthly M5 Farm to Fork Market on the last Wednesday of the month (May through September), bringing in live music and fellow vendors selling local pork, chicken, eggs, milk, and handmade crafts.

Why the List Isn't Exhaustive

Micro-Homesteads & Hobby Farms: Hancock County features dozens of smaller, family-run homesteads that do not maintain full websites or permanent farm stores. Instead, they sell surplus eggs, seasonal produce, or fresh-cut flowers right from the end of their driveways with self-serve honor boxes or via local Facebook community groups.
The Seasonal Market Ecosystem: Many hyper-local producers only sell a few weeks out of the year during peak harvest (e.g., sweet corn or pumpkin season) and operate entirely through local pop-ups like Market on Main in downtown Greenfield, or the seasonal markets in Greenfield Fairgrounds, Fortville, New Palestine, Cumberland, and McCordsville.
Cross-County Border Farms: Several direct-to-consumer farms sit right on the county lines (like in southern Madison County or northern Shelby County) and primarily serve Hancock County residents through local deliveries or markets, blurring the geographic line.
