The most recent available analysis from found that approximately 1.9 million acres of grasslands were converted to cropland across the U.S. and Canadian portions of the Great Plains in 2022. That was an improvement from the previous 10-year average of 2.6 million acres per year, but it still represents a major loss of perennial grassland.
That number should stop us for a moment.
The Great Plains were once one of the largest grassland ecosystems on earth. Deep-rooted prairie grasses evolved alongside grazing animals, fire, drought, and long recovery periods. Those grasslands held soil in place, absorbed rainfall, supported wildlife, and produced food from land that often cannot sustainably support continuous cropping over the long term.
Grasslands were never empty land.
They were working ecosystems.
When people talk about the loss of grasslands in the American West, the conversation often turns into blame.
Ranchers are accused of overgrazing.
Cattle are blamed for environmental damage.
Grasslands are described as degraded or disappearing.

The machine itself is not the main problem.
The deeper problem is a policy and economic system that often subsidizes the risk of water-intensive cropping while asking grass-based ranchers to compete on their own.

And it gives all of us a practical way to push back on a food system that many people can plainly see is not serving the land, the farmer, or the customer very well.

Not because it is easier. In many ways it is harder.
