Our Goal Is the Best Grass-Fed Beef in the World
Our goal is to produce the best grass-fed beef in the world. We’re fortunate to pursue it in Central Indiana, where place, pasture, and each growing season shape our work.
“If we’re going to make the best jackets in the world, we cannot also make the most jackets.”
Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard said that in an interview with Jimmy Chin in Outside. It gets right to the choice we’re making at Tyner Pond Farm.
Our goal is to produce the best grass-fed beef in the world.
The best quality. Not the biggest farm or the most pounds of beef. That’s the goal we want our decisions measured against.
I believe Central Indiana is one of the best places in the world to pursue that goal. We’re fortunate to farm here. Our cool springs and falls favor the grasses that form the backbone of our pastures. That gives us an extraordinary place to start.
The beef we produce belongs to this place. It starts with these pastures in Greenfield, this climate, and the decisions we make about how to graze them. We move the cattle, give the grass time to recover, and save forage for the seasons ahead. We’re working with what this land does well.
There’s something of a vintage to it, too. A winegrower pays attention to what a particular year brings to the vineyard. We pay attention to what each season brings to the pasture. Rain, heat, and the timing of growth all influence what cattle have to eat and how they finish. Each season calls for different grazing decisions. Our cattle grow across seasons and years, and this year is part of that story.
We’ve got a remarkable place to raise grass-fed beef. Our job is to make the most of that opportunity through the care we give the land and the animals.
Our beef is 100% grass-fed and grass-finished. Producing it well means giving cattle good forage, good care, and the time they need to finish well on grass. The condition of the animal matters. So does the condition of the pasture it leaves behind.
And it has to be great beef to eat. Flavor and tenderness belong at the center of this ambition. The care we put into raising cattle needs to carry through to the meal you make for your family. That’s what we mean by quality. It reaches from the pasture all the way to your plate.
We’ve got a finite amount of land. Choosing to work within what it can support is part of choosing quality. The same standard applies when we work with farm partners. Any growth has to strengthen the work we’re here to do.
So, why do we sometimes run out of a product? Because we’re choosing to produce beef this way, within the limits of the land, the animals, and the time it takes. We also work with whole animals, each of which gives us only so many of a particular cut. Availability follows those realities.
We’re building Tyner Pond Farm around the quality of the beef and the care that produces it. Producing the best grass-fed beef in the world is a big goal. It’s the one we’re choosing.
