Not All Grass-Fed Beef Is the Same
A new study published in the Journal of Animal Science found that grass-fed beef varies significantly depending on pasture quality and grazing management. The research suggests some retail grass-fed beef may have much weaker omega-3 profiles than beef from regenerative grazing systems.
New Research Shows Why Pasture Management Matters
For years, many regenerative farmers have argued that the words “grass-fed” only tell part of the story.
A new peer-reviewed study published in the Oxford University Press journal Journal of Animal Science helps explain why.
Researchers analyzed hundreds of beef samples from across North America and compared grass-fed beef to grain-fed beef. Overall, the grass-fed beef showed significantly stronger nutritional profiles.
The grass-fed samples contained:
- Better omega-6 to omega-3 ratios
- Higher omega-3 fatty acids
- More CLA
- Higher EPA and DPA levels
- Increased levels of minerals like iron and selenium
One of the clearest findings involved the omega-6 to omega-3 ratio.
The average grass-fed sample measured about 2.14 compared to 8.28 in grain-fed beef.
That is a substantial difference.
But the most important finding in the study was not simply that grass-fed beef performed better overall.
It was that some grass-fed beef performed much better than others.
The Study Found Major Differences Within Grass-Fed Beef
The researchers found surprisingly large variation inside the grass-fed category itself.
Some grass-fed beef samples had very strong omega-3 profiles.
Others did not.
In fact, the omega-6 to omega-3 ratios among the grass-fed samples ranged from 0.62 to 11.45.
That means some grass-fed beef looked nutritionally excellent, while other samples had omega balances approaching grain-fed beef.
The researchers also found an important pattern:
Grass-fed beef from farms using:
- Diverse pasture systems
- Rotational grazing
- Higher-quality forage
tended to have stronger nutritional profiles.
That matters because it suggests the quality of the pasture system itself directly affects the quality of the beef.
In other words, the label alone does not tell the full story.
The management behind the label matters too.
What This Means For Grocery Store Grass-Fed Beef
Over the last decade, grass-fed beef has become a major grocery category.
Large retailers now source grass-fed beef through global supply chains from countries around the world.
Some of it is perfectly legitimate grass-fed beef.
But this study raises an important question:
If pasture diversity and grazing management affect nutritional quality, then should consumers think more carefully about where their grass-fed beef actually comes from?
The study suggests the answer is yes.
Some retail-purchased grass-fed beef samples showed relatively weak omega-3 profiles despite carrying the grass-fed label.
That does not mean grocery store grass-fed beef is “fake.” And it does not mean every grocery product is low quality.
But it does mean the term “grass-fed” is no longer enough by itself to fully describe how beef was raised.
Today, much of the grocery grass-fed category operates through large international commodity systems focused on consistency, supply scale, and distribution efficiency.
Regenerative farms are often focused on something different:
- Soil biology
- Pasture diversity
- Animal health
- Grazing management
- Nutrient density
- Long-term land health
Those differences may matter more than many consumers realize.
Why Pasture Diversity Matters
Healthy pasture is not simply “grass.”
A healthy pasture contains many interacting species:
- Grasses
- Legumes
- Broadleaf plants
- Soil microbes
- Insects
- Deep root systems
When cattle are rotated properly with long recovery periods, those systems become more biologically active and resilient.
That affects the forage the animals consume every day.
And ultimately, it affects the nutritional profile of the beef itself.
This study helps support something many regenerative farmers have believed for years:
Healthy soil supports healthier pasture. Healthier pasture supports healthier animals. And healthier animals may produce more nutrient-dense food.
Why Local Farms Matter
One reason local food matters is transparency.
When you buy directly from a farm, you can ask questions that are impossible to answer from a package label alone.
You can ask:
- How often are the cattle moved?
- What do the pastures look like?
- How diverse are the forage species?
- Is the farm building soil?
- Are chemicals heavily used?
- Is this beef from one farm or a large commodity network?
Those questions matter because the production system matters.
This new study suggests consumers may be right to think beyond labels and look more closely at the farming practices behind their food.
